The Village Foundation of Illinois
Chicago, Illinois
The Village Foundation of Illinois was founded by Kamilah Jarvis in 2002 as a catalyst for change, preparing high school students from working class families for college and success, while educating parents on the benefits of long-term saving for college tuition.
The Foundation is located in South Central Chicago, in space donated by a local church. With limited capital resources, the Village Foundation held workshops in churches, libraries and public schools. For seven years the student’s only access to computer technology and the internet was at the local public library, 30 minute timed sessions, or a board member or volunteer that lent their computers to the Foundation for workshops or Saturday sessions.
Through a TDF Foundation grant in October 2009, the Village Foundation now has computers, broadband connectivity and IT support for students.
